A Hartsville man died Sunday night after being accidentally shot by his 6-year-old son, according to authorities.

James E. Lonaker, 62,  died while being flown by helicopter to IU Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

Bartholomew County deputies were called to a home in the 200 block of Clinton Street in Hartsville at 9:17 p.m. and found that Lonaker had been shot in the upper body, said Judy Jackson, spokeswoman for the sheriff’s department. She said that Lonaker appeared to have been sitting at his desk when he was shot. Deputies reported that an unsecured .38-caliber revolver  had been picked up by the child and the shooting was an accident.

Lonaker’s wife and a 1-year-old were at home at the time of the shooting and neither were injured, Jackson said.

The incident is under investigation by the sheriff’s department. Hartsville volunteer firefighters, Columbus Regional Hospital paramedics and STAT Flight helicopter assisted at the scene.
