State Street salt barn project bids come in too high

Dec 1, 2015 314

Bartholomew County will be going back to the drawing board for a new salt barn on State Street after bids came back at more than half a million dollars. Commissioner Larry Kleinhenz said that the Indiana Department of Environmental Management has found the current salt storage lacking and a danger to the environment as much of the salt is stored and mixed in the open and can leach into the ground. County Commissioners had expected to spend about $350,000 for the new salt storage facility, but the lowest bid that came back from construction firms was about $530,000, commissioners said. Commissioners decided yesterday to reject all of the bids and to start over. Kleinhenz said that the county would put the project back out to bid after refining the specifics of the project. He said the county would hope to have new bids in hand by the end of the year. ...

Jennings County deputies arrested 27-year-old Jonathan L. Evans on drug dealing charges Sunday morning after finding him asleep in his car facing the wrong way on County Road 500 South. Lt. Mike Mowery, spokesman for the sheriff’s department, said that deputies found Evans in the car, parked facing west, in the eastbound lane of the road at about 7 a.m. Sunday. While deputies questioned Evans, he told officers he was cold and asked them to retrieve his coat from the car. That’s when deputies allegedly discovered drug paraphernalia, a magazine for a handgun and cash. A search of the car allegedly revealed 16.5 grams of methamphetamine and equipment normally used to sell drugs, Mowery said. Evans was arrested on preliminary charges of possession of meth, dealing meth, a violation of the legend drug act and possession of paraphernalia. ...

County plans to shed employees

Dec 1, 2015 371

Bartholomew County hopes to shed 10 of its employees next year, by not filling open positions. The County Council will make any department heads who want to replace an open spot, come before the council to justify the need. Council members said this will not be a hiring freeze, as some essential positions could be filled as needed, but the long-term goal is to reduce the number of county employees. According to numbers from the auditor’s office, Bartholomew County has 443 employees, including 379 full time and 64 part-time. The council is trying to figure a way out of the same budget crunch for 2017 that led to a months long stalemate among county officials earlier this year while working on the 2016 budget. They estimate that the county will have to trim about a million dollars out of the budget to make ends meet next year. The council agreed that positions in public safety would not be affected by the reviews, including jobs at the jail, the sheriff’s department and... ...
